For Sonya Turner, LVN, Director of Intake, CC and Back Office Operations, nursing is part of her family’s legacy. She watched her mother and sister care for patients for years until 2009 when she says she “answered the call” to become a nurse. Prior to working for the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), Sonya worked in assisted living and memory care facilities. In 2017, she made what she says was a natural move to VNA.
In her role, Sonya oversees the hospice intake team, crisis care management, and all back-office operations VNA Hospice Care. She works with her team daily to ensure that their customers, including referral sources, insurers and the hospice clinical team receive the best possible customer service. Having been a Client Intake Clerk and the Manager of Intake, Crisis Care and Back office previously, Sonya has performed every one of the positions in her department. “I understand the stress and challenges my team experiences. Supporting them in whatever way they need that day is the favorite part of my job,” she says.
As a nurse, Sonya also understands the needs of the patient and the patient family and has developed process improvements that best serve those needs. She’s a compassionate listener and seeks to understand issues—regardless of the origin—and find solutions that are creative and effective. At the same time, she likes to have fun at work and her co-workers are always met with her boundless energy and megawatt smile!
Sonya looks forward to better utilizing VNA’s internal resources to bridge the gap between departments. “I believe that if we work together more closely as a company, we will be even more understanding of our patients and clients, and stronger as an organization,” she says.
When she’s not working, you’ll find Sonya enjoying her two children and her two grandchildren.
“I love doing what I do,” she says. “I’m so grateful I finally answer the call to become a nurse!”
