Tune in to the latest VNA Aging Well Podcast

Planning for age and illness is vitally important and often ignored by families until a crisis. With our “Aging Well with VNA” podcast series, our goal is to help you and your loved ones understand options, know where to get help and gain tools on how to communicate your wishes. Through education and proper planning, you will be prepared to honor your loved one’s wishes.

In our latest episode, VNA’s Kersten Rettig visits with Jim Atkins, a surviving spouse of an Alzheimer’s patient, about how they planned for a future with Alzheimer’s. Jim shares how he and his wife worked together to put legal, financial, and end-of-life plans in place before the disease robbed her of her memory. Tune in to hear his touching story of how he carried out her wishes and where he found the help he needed to navigate this terrible disease.

Thanks for tuning in!

Feel the Power of Pie

In 2013, "Selfie" was named by Oxford Dictionaries as word of the year. In that same year, Candy Crush Saga was downloaded more than 500 million times and was considered to be the most downloaded app from Apple. And the cronut, a croissant-doughnut pastry was the most popular baked good of the year….or was it? We beg to differ.

In 2013, VNA created the Power of Pie, Dallas' premier pie event and most delicious way to support seniors. Since that time, Power of Pie has sold a whopping 6,273 pies, raising $190,322 in funds, which has provided 31,720 meals.

We need your help to reach our 2019 goal:

  • Sell 1,500 pies and 200 loaves of pumpkin bread.

  • Provide 6,260 meals to homebound seniors.

If you're new to Power of Pie, here's the gist. Pumpkin pies, pecan pies and pumpkin bread are donated by Dallas' best bakers and are purchased by the community for $25 per pie and $12 per loaf. All proceeds benefit VNA's programs and services. For those who don't like pie or who will be out of town for the holiday, the website offers the option to purchase a "zero calorie pie" for $25; that's a $25 donation, no pie.

How? Pies are ordered online at www.powerofpie.org and purchasers select their preferred date and pick-up location throughout Dallas, Collin and Denton counties.

When? The deadline to place orders is Monday, November 18th. Pie pick up is November 26th or 27th, depending on the selected location.

Who bakes the pies?
Bakers include: 3015 at Trinity Groves, Bisous-Bisous Patisserie, Bresnan Bread and Pastry, Brookhollow Golf Club, Cafe Momentum, Central Market, Collin College, Empire Baking Company, Flora Street Café, Haute Sweets Patisserie, Knife, Lakewood Country Club, Norma's Cafe, Oddfellows, Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, Tarrant County College, The Preston of the Park Cities, The Sweet Life Chef, TRIO, Uncle Willie's Pies, Ventura Foods, and Wolfgang Puck Catering. *as of 11/4/19

A message from CEO, Katherine Krause

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for, especially those we care for and those who care for us. Having “the talk” with your family regarding end-of-life wishes may seem ill-timed during the holidays, but it is crucial to begin the conversation while everyone is healthy and together.

Areas you’ll want to consider include housing, Advance Care Documents, estate planning, and medical wishes.  Click here to view a checklist for aging well and be sure to tune in to our Aging Well Podcast series.  Sending these links to your family ahead of time will help get everyone on the same page and generate meaningful conversations.

This year, make creating, reviewing and updating your estate plans and advance care planning documents, and informing your loved ones of your wishes a priority. You’ll be giving yourself peace of mind and your loved ones a gift.

Warmly,
Katherine
